Lipids
Lipids function:
1. Lipids can be used as long-term energy storage.
2. Lipids are the main component of the cell membrane.
The four main types of Lipids?
Triglycerides: (ex. Saturated, unsaturated, polyunsaturated.)
Phospholipids: (ex. Eggs, fish, oil seeds)
Steroids: (ex. Cholesterol, hormones, vitamins ABD)
Waxes: ( ex. Honeycomb waxes, candle wax, ear wax)
Why we need to eat lipids? Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell function. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones, too.
How much lipids should we eat daily. So if you're following a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, your target range for total fat is 44 to 78 grams a day.
facts about lipids:
- They store energy in the body. ...
- They are part of structural components of cells, such as cell membranes. ...
- They play a role in insulation. ...
Saturated Fats:
- No double bond
- Straight structure
- Solid at room temperature
Unsaturated Fats:
- One double bonds
- bent structure
- liquid at room temperature
Polyunsaturated Fats:
- Multiple double bonds in cis configuration
- Even more "bent" in structure
- Liquid at room temperature
Why is Trans fat bad for your health? Raises the “bad” cholesterol and it lowers the “good” cholesterol.
