Proteins

 Proteins

Structure: Proteins are macromolecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen & nitrogen.

Types of proteins: All proteins fall into one of a total of seven different protein types. These include of transport proteins, hormones, structural proteins, contractile proteins, enzymes, and antibodies.

Function: Some proteins provide structural support and motion.

Why do we need to eat protein? Protein is essential to good health, you need to make bricks and mortar of the body, including muscle, bone, and blood.

How much proteins should we eat daily? Most adults need around 0.75g of protein per kilo of body weight per day (for the average woman, this is 45g, or 55g for men).

3d Animation protein:

Interesting facts:

1. Protein exists in every single cell in our body.

2. Each gram of protein provides 4 calories?

3. Protein is made up of 22 amino acids, nine of which are essential.

Lipids

 Lipids

Lipids function:

1. Lipids can be used as long-term energy storage.

2. Lipids are the main component of the cell membrane.

The four main types of Lipids?

Triglycerides: (ex. Saturated, unsaturated, polyunsaturated.)

Phospholipids: (ex. Eggs, fish, oil seeds)

Steroids: (ex. Cholesterol, hormones, vitamins ABD)

Waxes: ( ex. Honeycomb waxes, candle wax, ear wax)

Why we need to eat lipids? Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell function. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones, too.

How much lipids should we eat daily. So if you're following a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, your target range for total fat is 44 to 78 grams a day.

facts about lipids:

  • They store energy in the body. ...
  • They are part of structural components of cells, such as cell membranes. ...
  • They play a role in insulation. ...

Triglycerides Types:

Saturated Fats:

  • No double bond
  • Straight structure
  • Solid at room temperature

Unsaturated Fats:

  • One double bonds
  • bent structure
  • liquid at room temperature

Polyunsaturated Fats:

  • Multiple double bonds in cis configuration
  • Even more "bent" in structure
  • Liquid at room temperature

Why is Trans fat bad for your health? Raises the “bad” cholesterol and it lowers the “good” cholesterol.

Water

 Water is life

Describe the water molecules: a water molecule is a piece of matter that contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, linked by single chemical bonds.

Why do we need to drink? Water is vital to our health. It plays a key role in many of our body's functions, including bringing nutrients to cells, getting rid of wastes, protecting joints and organs, and maintaining body temperature.

How much water should we drink daily? How much water should we drink daily? About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men. About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.

Cohesive and adhesive:

Cohesive: is an attraction between molecules of the same substance.

Adhesive: is an attraction between molecules of different substances.

Surface tension: how hard to break the surface of the liquid.

Universal solvent: because water can dissolve many substance like polar and ionic substances.

Capillary action: is the up ward motion of water within narrow tubes.

Heat capacity: is defined by the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance 1 degree Celsius (°C).

Polarity: Polarity causes water molecules to attract each other like magnets.

Interesting facts about water:

Water could be the key to finding life. ...

Almost all Earth's water is in the oceans. ...

Most freshwater is in ice. ...

  • The amount of salt in salt water varies.

Carbohydrate

 Carbohydrate

Why we need carbs in our diet: When we eat carbohydrates, we provide our body with fuel (energy) to function at every physiological level. Our digestive system breaks down carbohydrates into glucose (blood sugar), which feeds energy to our cells, tissues, and organs. Energy not utilized immediately is stored in our muscles and liver where our body uses it on an as-needed basis. Without adequate carbohydrate consumption, our body may experience feeling tired, headache, lethargic and unable to push through a workout.

The functions of carbohydrates: is short term energy source, provide structural support to the cells.

example of foods that contain carbohydrates: milk, sugars and deserts, all kind of fruits, nuts, grains

How much carbohydrate should we eat daily? So if you get 2,000 calories a day, between 900 and 1,300 calories should be from carbohydrates.

Facts about carbohydrates:

1. Carbohydrates are an important source of fiber

2. Not banning carbohydrates from the diet is a good idea

3. Carbohydrates can be simple or complex
